Continue ShoppingA Permanent Refuge for the Forgotten Animal Town Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Sage, California, dedicated to providing lifelong care for senior, special needs, and unadoptable dogs rescued from high-kill shelters across Southern California. Founded in 2012 by husband and wife Travis and Lisa Poper, the sanctuary was created with a simple but powerful mission: to give forgotten animals a safe, peaceful, and dignified place to live out the remainder of their lives. Unlike traditional rescues, Animal Town Sanctuary does not adopt animals out. Instead, they provide permanent refuge for dogs that are often just hours away from euthanasia due to age, illness, or behavioral challenges. Many of the animals they rescue have experienced neglect or abuse, arriving in poor physical and emotional condition. Through daily rehabilitation, proper nutrition, and consistent care, these dogs are given a second chance—not at adoption, but at comfort, stability, and compassion. The Senior Wellness Program and Lifelong Care Central to their work is a comprehensive Senior Wellness Program, which includes bi-annual health screenings, specialized diets, supplements, and holistic therapies designed to improve quality of life. Their team focuses on early detection and proactive treatment, ensuring that each animal receives individualized care tailored to their needs. As these dogs age, Animal Town Sanctuary also provides round-the-clock hospice and end-of-life care, allowing them to pass peacefully and with dignity. Beyond Dogs: Supporting Cats and Wildlife Conservation In addition to their canine sanctuary, Animal Town Sanctuary plays an active role in supporting other vulnerable animal populations. They support efforts to stabilize and reduce feral cat populations in the community by partnering with local cat rescues that have greater resources for humane trapping, spaying or neutering, and returning cats to their environment. In some cases, cats that show signs of socialization are given the opportunity to transition into indoor homes, further improving their quality of life. Their commitment to animal welfare also extends to wildlife conservation. Animal Town Sanctuary provides a safe haven for displaced tortoises, including Mojave Desert tortoises and a large Sulcata, whose natural habitats have been impacted by development and environmental changes. Each tortoise is cared for in a species-appropriate enclosure with native vegetation and burrowing areas, allowing them to live in a setting that closely resembles their natural environment. Partnering with Local Shelters to Achieve No-Kill Goals Over the years, Animal Town Sanctuary has become a vital partner to local shelters, often stepping in to take the most vulnerable animals—those with little to no chance of adoption. By doing so, they help alleviate overcrowding and support the broader goal of achieving no-kill communities. How You Can Help Sustain the Mission As a nonprofit, Animal Town Sanctuary is entirely dependent on community support. Donations, purchases from their online store, and increased awareness all play a critical role in sustaining their mission. Every contribution, no matter the size, directly impacts the lives of animals who would otherwise have nowhere to go. 4Knines is proud to partner with Animal Town Sanctuary and support their commitment to providing lifelong care, dignity, and love to every animal. Learn moreSupporting Veterans. Saving Lives. Rescuing Dogs. Soldier’s Best Friend provides U.S. military veterans living with combat-related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) with Service Dogs—most of whom are rescued from local shelters. While they are devoted to helping veterans living with PTSD or TBI, there is a second part to their mission: creating a positive impact on pet overpopulation. They are dedicated to pairing and training Service Dogs with veterans at NO cost to the veteran. The veteran and dog train together to build a trusting relationship that saves two lives at once and inspires countless others. Proven Impact Since 2011 Since 2011, Soldier’s Best Friend has helped 483 Veterans (and counting) by providing them with service dogs at NO COST. They have also rescued over 380 homeless dogs. Research continues to demonstrate the powerful impact of service dogs. Studies show that service dogs help veterans mitigate suicidal ideations, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms of PTSD or TBI. In a 2021 VA study, veterans paired with Service Dogs over an 18-month period showed a drastic decrease in depression and suicidal thoughts. Veteran Testimonial: Mohammed & Trigger “I want to begin by thanking Soldiers Best Friend from the bottom of my heart. I am a Veteran of the Army and recently retired as an Associate Warden from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. I left the Army in 1995 and have been dealing with PTSD since an incident in the desert early that year. As a soldier, I deal with it, finding ways to manage the demons; however, I can get through the days. I often wondered about a service dog, but as I researched, it wasn’t affordable. My VA psychologist, in one of our sessions, asked if I would be interested, which I was. They told me about SBF, and that’s where the change began, though I didn’t know it at the time. I went through the process of applying, and on September 15, 2023, I received a call from SBF informing me that I was accepted into the organization. I was extremely excited, anxious, and nervous all at the same time. They helped find me what has turned out to be the perfect pup. We both had issues when we met—something we both would have to work through. I named her Trigger because it didn’t take much to set me off anymore. I didn’t know anything about training a dog, so we would learn together. Our biggest challenge was “Stay.” She had been dumped before and wasn’t going to let me walk away, ever, it seemed. We practiced over and over, and nothing seemed to work. One day in training, my trainer made an adjustment to what I was doing, and it worked! Turned out Trigger knew it all along—I just had to learn how to communicate it to her. This was it. There’s nothing we can’t do together. Through all the training and tests, we grew closer together. I have now learned how to manage my issues better. There will always be “those days,” but with her by my side, they are less frequent, and I can manage the demons so much better. I am proud to be part of the SBF organization. The motto is “Touching 2 lives at once.” In my case, it’s saving two lives at once.” The True Cost of Changing Lives While the Service Dog Training Program is provided at no cost to participating veterans, the average cost to Soldier’s Best Friend is $7,500 per veteran/dog team. Funding support helps cover an array of program expenses, including: Wages for professional dog trainers Dog expenses (food, water bowls, harnesses, collars, crates, waste bags, training supplies, veterinary care, etc.) Staff time for support services Every dollar directly supports the life-changing partnership between a veteran and their service dog. Learn moreA Mission Rooted in Compassion Do His Work is an Arizona-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting unhoused individuals and their pets through direct outreach, compassion, and practical assistance. The organization grew from a simple realization repeated over and over on the streets: many people will refuse shelter, services, or opportunities if it means leaving their pets behind. And honestly, most of us understand why. Pets aren’t property — they’re family, protection, companionship, and sometimes the only steady source of unconditional love someone has. So Do His Work chose a different approach: help pets and the people who love them together. Meeting People Where They Are Through regular outreach across the Phoenix area, the team meets people where they are — in parks, parking lots, sidewalks, encampments, and at local shelter events. They provide dog food, leashes, collars, harnesses, bowls, blankets, toys, and other essentials to help pets and their owners remain healthy and safe. Mark and Samson: A Story That Shaped the Vision One recent encounter shows how powerful that mission can be. During outreach, the team met Mark, a veteran, and his loyal dog Samson. Mark explained he needed rotator cuff surgery but felt stuck — he had no safe place for Samson to stay while he recovered. Housing was waiting for him once surgery was complete, but he couldn’t imagine moving forward if it meant losing his dog in the meantime. Do His Work was able to provide supplies that day, but more importantly, the conversation highlighted a growing need: temporary care options for pets while their humans recover, stabilize, or get back on their feet. Experiences like Mark and Samson’s are shaping the organization’s long-term goal of creating safe, temporary solutions so no one has to choose between healing and their best friend. A Hands-On Approach What makes Do His Work unique is its hands-on approach. Volunteers don’t just hand out supplies and leave; they build relationships, learn names, and return week after week. Success is measured not only in items distributed, but in trust earned — and in the wagging tails that remember them when they return. Powered by Community Support Community support keeps this work moving. Donations of dog food, puppy food, treats, toys, pop-up bowls, leashes, harnesses, and seasonal protection items — like boots for scorching summers or cold, wet winters — help outreach teams respond to whatever challenges the next week brings. 4Knines is proud to support the mission of Do His Work and to stand alongside organizations that protect the bond between dogs and the humans who love them. If you are inspired by their mission, please consider supporting Do His Work through a donation of supplies or a financial contribution to help expand outreach and develop temporary care solutions for pets in need. Every bag of food, every leash, and every dollar makes a direct impact on both pets and their people. At its heart, Do His Work is about showing up — for pets, for people, and for the powerful bond that keeps them moving forward together.
Learn moreUnega Mountain Dog Rescue, founded in 2021 by Tiffany Larson, is a licensed 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and homing of abandoned Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs). Based in Idaho, the group’s mission is to save LGDs from abandonment and abuse—an all-too-common occurrence in their region, where no laws currently protect these working dogs from mistreatment. How Unega Began Unega began as an idea after finding their first abandoned Great Pyrenees in the mountains near Sun Valley, Idaho. Named Kellee-Lulu, she was dying of parvo, abandoned on the trailside; left after the sheep had already passed through. Lu was a catalyst for a much larger issue, and each year more and more abandoned dogs were discovered and rescued by Tiffany. By 2021, Unega became an official nonprofit, working full time to rescue the abandoned, the injured, and the forgotten. Tiffany’s passion for these guardians only magnified each year, growing stronger through sadness, heartbreak, and found happiness with a growing team of like individuals. Phoenix’s Story At the start of 2026, Unega rescued yet another abandoned soul—a dog they named Phoenix. He had been wandering alone after suffering a gunshot injury, in very poor condition and unable to eat or drink. Unega rushed him to the nearest 24‑hour emergency veterinarian, two hours away, where he was immediately taken into critical care. Despite the team’s efforts and deep compassion, Phoenix’s condition continued to decline, and his injuries were simply too severe for him to recover. After 48 hours, Phoenix was gently laid to rest, held and loved by Unega and the dedicated doctors who cared for him. A Catalyst for Change Just as Kellee-Lulu was a catalyst for discovering these abandoned guardians, Phoenix has become Unega’s catalyst for change. His story underscores the urgent need to strengthen Livestock Guardian Dog rights and protections in Idaho, and to challenge the long‑standing mindsets that allow mistreatment of the very dogs who protect the flocks. Those who guard livestock deserve honor, care, and kindness—not abandonment or abuse. For Phoenix, Unega will continue rescuing the abandoned. For Phoenix, Unega will push for meaningful change—not only for LGDs, but hopefully for all animals who currently have no legal protections. How You Can Help 4Knines is honored to support Unega’s mission through direct donations and this monthly spotlight article to help raise awareness for the critical work they do. Learn moreSaving Lives, One Rescue at a Time Founded in 2019, Halfway Home Animal Rescue Team (HHART) rescues, rehabilitates, and finds loving homes for animals in distress or at risk of losing their lives. We help all kinds and breeds—dogs, cats, small animals, even pigs. Seniors, special-needs animals, those with medical challenges, the unwanted, and the discarded are always our priority. HHART focuses on animals in Northern NJ, especially those in city shelters, living on the streets, or being surrendered for euthanasia. We have saved more than 1,000 animals to date. Each receives the medical care they need and is placed in a safe, loving foster home until they find their forever family. Supporting the Community In addition to helping animals, HHART supports pet owners in need. We collect and donate dog and cat food to local food banks—more than 13 tons so far. This helps families keep their pets at home and prevents unnecessary surrenders. A Dedicated Volunteer Team HHART is run entirely by a small group of volunteers. Nearly 90% of all expenses go directly toward animal care, and the majority of that covers medical treatment. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we rely solely on donations from those who believe in our mission. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps save a life. Stories of Hope Sasha Sasha was found living in a basement, underweight and in need of urgent care. After being surrendered to a shelter, HHART stepped in and arranged the surgery she needed. Just days later, Sasha was enjoying walks, rolling in the grass, and showing her happy personality. Her transformation was remarkable. George George was discovered after a frightening adventure near the George Washington Bridge. He was brought to a local emergency clinic, where it became clear he needed ongoing care and support. HHART welcomed him into the rescue, and after months of recovery, George is now thriving and enjoying life. Ozzy Ozzy was found in a sewer, confused and in poor condition. He was treated for an illness and given round-the-clock attention. At one point, his future seemed uncertain, but Ozzy showed a spark of determination that touched everyone around him. A volunteer brought him home to recover, and today he is doing wonderfully. Bria Bria arrived at a shelter timid and unsure, holding one of her legs close to her chest. She had recently been separated from her previous family and companion, leaving her overwhelmed. With HHART’s care, Bria blossomed. She now lives with a loving foster family and has been fitted with a prosthesis that gives her renewed freedom. Simon Simon needed a medical procedure his family wasn’t able to provide. HHART stepped in, and when his situation changed unexpectedly, the rescue ensured he still received the help he needed. Simon quickly won hearts and was adopted into a new home where he’s enjoying a fresh start. HHART also helps animals of all kinds—a turkey found after a holiday, a pig discovered wandering a city street, and baby ducks rescued from a park. Every life matters. Learn moreCompassion at the Core of Furry Friends Humane At Furry Friends Humane, compassion drives everything they do. Every single day—365 days a year—the team works tirelessly to save lives and build a more humane future for animals across Florida. Based in Jupiter, Florida, Furry Friends Humane is more than just a shelter. It is a no-kill, solution-driven rescue that partners directly with municipal shelters to pull animals who would otherwise face euthanasia due to overcrowding. Powered by Volunteers The organization is powered by a remarkable 930 active volunteers. These individuals are the heartbeat of the mission, showing up rain or shine to walk dogs, socialize cats, assist in adoptions, and help at the thrift boutique. Together, they are helping Furry Friends reimagine what’s possible in animal rescue. Innovative Programs Beyond Traditional Rescue What sets Furry Friends apart is not only what it does—but how it does it. Its programs go beyond traditional rescue: from relocating at-risk animals through the Lifesaving Relocation Program to transforming lives through the Shelter to Service Dog Program, the organization works to save animals while supporting veterans, seniors, and children. Its public veterinary clinic provides affordable, expert care—no pet is turned away, regardless of an owner's ability to pay. Overcoming Challenges Furry Friends is proud to be Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control’s #1 rescue partner, but its work has not been without hardship. In 2024, the Palm City Ranch site was severely damaged by a tornado during Hurricane Milton. Roofs were torn off, fencing destroyed, and critical structures reduced to debris. Despite these setbacks, the team has continued to show up every day—for the animals who depend on the organization. Stories of Hope: Kenny’s Journey One such animal is Kenny, a 3-year-old dog rescued from Palm Beach County. When he arrived, he was frozen in place, unable to move. X-rays revealed a BB pellet lodged in his neck, causing life-threatening tetanus. The shelter and medicine team worked around the clock, and thanks to months of care and the love of a foster family, Kenny took his first steps again. His story is a testament to what can be achieved through dedication and collaboration. Urgent Needs Due to the constant demands of shelter care, Furry Friends is in urgent need of commercial washers and dog beds. These essential items help provide clean, comfortable spaces for the animals—many of whom are recovering from trauma or illness. Older residential washers were previously used but cannot withstand the intensity of daily operations. Join in Making a Difference 4Knines is proud to spotlight Furry Friends Humane this month, and we invite our community to join us in supporting their lifesaving work. Please consider donating, volunteering, or sharing their story. Every contribution brings hope. Every action saves lives. Because at Furry Friends Humane, they are here for the animals—every single day.
Learn moreGiving Dobermans a Second Chance Dobie Ranch Rescue Inc., founded in 2010 by Diane DeSantis, is a licensed 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming Doberman Pinschers. Based in Florida, the group’s mission is to give unwanted Dobermans a second chance at a safe and loving home. The rescue was inspired by Abbie Rose, a Doberman whose short life left a lasting legacy. Through her unconditional love, loyalty, and spirit of giving, Abbie taught valuable lessons about both joy and heartbreak. Her memory lives on through Dobie Ranch Rescue, ensuring that other Dobermans in need are given the same chance to find safe, loyal, and forever homes. Most Dobermans in their care come from shelters across Florida, with some arriving from Georgia and Alabama. Others are surrendered by owners unable to provide proper care. On average, Dobie Ranch Rescue takes in about 175 Dobermans each year, ensuring that “no Doberman is left behind.” Unlike many rescues, Dobie Ranch Rescue operates entirely through foster homes rather than kennels. Each dog lives as part of a family, allowing foster parents to evaluate personality, preferences, and behavior in everyday situations. This valuable insight helps match every Doberman with the right adoptive family, reducing the chance of returns and creating lasting bonds. Education is another key focus. Potential adopters receive guidance on the breed’s characteristics, health concerns, and training needs to ensure they are well prepared to care for their new companion. Dobie Ranch also shares success stories and updates through social media, highlighting the resilience of Dobermans and inspiring others to adopt, foster, or volunteer. At 4Knines, we are proud to support Dobie Ranch Rescue and their tireless work saving and rehoming this loyal breed. Their mission reflects our own commitment to helping dogs and their families enjoy safe, happy lives together. If you’d like to get involved, consider donating to Dobie Ranch Rescue. Your support helps provide food, medical care, and supplies for Dobermans in need—and brings them one step closer to finding their forever homes. Together, we can ensure no Doberman is left behind.
Learn moreRosie’s Legacy: The Heart Behind Rosie Fund In 2013, a brindle pit bull mix was found abandoned in a backyard weighing only 40 pounds, almost 20 pounds below her healthy weight. She was a 6-year-old, heartworm positive, poorly socialized pit bull mix. She was great with people but aggressive with most dogs. Unfortunately, at the KC Pet Project shelter she was surrounded by other shelter dogs and visitors only saw her anti-social side. But the volunteers grew to love the sweet dog that they took on walks. From Foster to Forever: Rosie’s New Life With all the strikes against her, the dog now dubbed Rosalita languished in a kennel for 8 months until Philip and Dawn Hatterman fostered her so she could get her heartworm treatment. Rosie (she never answered to Rosalita) used that time to build a home in their hearts. Philip and Dawn adopted Rosie and gave her the official name of Rosalita Patience Hatterman. They lavished her with all the love she could possibly stand and she returned that love a thousand-fold. A 6-week medical foster became a forever home for 88 weeks, the last of which was spent at BluePearl Pet Hospital where Rosie received the finest of treatment but could not overcome kidney failure. She went into cardiac arrest in the early hours of November 3, 2015 with Dawn and Philip by her side as the drugs were administered to ease her pain and help her transition. A Lasting Impact and an Inspired Mission When Philip and Dawn returned to the hospital the next day to settle the bill, they were told, "Rosie had many friends. Her bill has been paid." To this day, they don’t know who the anonymous donors were. Inspired by this kindness and Rosie's impact on their lives, the Hattermans pledged to help other "unadoptable" dogs like Rosie find their forever families. The Work of Rosie Fund The mission of Rosie Fund is to provide humans with the resources and education they need to give senior and harder-to-adopt dogs a better life. They identify dogs who are older or have other challenges that make them a harder-to-adopt dog. They get to know these dogs — working with them to film, photograph and create promotional content to shine a spotlight on often overlooked but lovable dogs. Some dogs also benefit from sponsored adoption fees or by receiving a $100 Rosie Life Starter Kit, which includes a collar, leash, ID tag, food, treats, toy, and an additional gift card to purchase other dog necessities. Celebrating 10 Years of Making a Difference Rosie Fund is entering their 10th year as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit. In that time, 100% of the $25,345 in donations have purchased Rosie Life Starter Kits, covered adoption fees and medical fees for 260 dogs. They’ve filmed and promoted over 475 dogs. You can join Rosie Fund’s mission by following them on Facebook and Instagram, subscribing to @RosieFund on YouTube, and listening to their podcast, Dog Words. 4Knines Monthly Spotlight 4Knines is proud to support nonprofits like Rosie Fund through our Monthly Spotlight program. Each month, we feature a deserving organization working to make life better for pets and their people, contributing both product donations and a monetary gift to help advance their mission. Learn moreRescuing Dallas’ Forgotten Dogs: The Mission of Duck Team 6 In the heart of Dallas, a dedicated group of volunteers is quietly transforming the lives of the city’s most vulnerable four-legged residents. Duck Team 6, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has made it their mission to reduce the street dog population through a powerful three-part approach: Capture, Placement, and Outreach. What makes Duck Team 6 especially remarkable is that it’s an all-volunteer rescue. Every operation, every captured dog, and every act of outreach is powered by individuals donating their time, energy, and hearts to a cause they deeply believe in. There are no paychecks—only a shared passion for saving lives. Specialized Street Dog Capture The group focuses on a particularly challenging population—dogs that are difficult to catch and often overlooked. Many of these animals have spent their entire lives on the streets, while others have been abandoned or lost, left to fend for themselves in a harsh urban environment. Rather than turning away, Duck Team 6 steps in with expertise and empathy. Their volunteers specialize in the safe capture of elusive strays—dogs that traditional rescue methods often fail to reach. Once secured, these dogs are placed with trusted local rescue partners, who provide essential medical care and foster homes until the dogs are ready for adoption. This network of collaboration ensures each rescued dog has a real chance at a better life. Community Outreach and Support Beyond rescue, Duck Team 6 is deeply committed to community outreach. The organization offers emergency medical support, pet food, supplies, and even builds secure outdoor runs for families in need. These services are critical for pet owners facing financial hardship, helping them care for and keep their animals safely at home. The team also champions prevention as a long-term solution. They host free vaccination clinics and promote affordable spay/neuter services to curb unwanted litters and reduce the number of dogs living on the streets. Education plays a key role in their outreach, as they work to empower communities to be part of the solution. A Commitment to Every Dog Duck Team 6 operates with an unwavering belief that every dog matters—no matter how long it’s been on the street or how hard it is to catch. Their work isn’t about quick fixes; it’s about lasting, meaningful change. With their signature sign-off—Semper Woof—Duck Team 6 reminds us that rescue is a team effort, and compassion is always worth the chase. 4Knines' Monthly Spotlight At 4Knines, we believe in supporting organizations that make a tangible difference in the lives of pets and their owners. Short for Community Awareness, Resources & Education, C.A.R.E.4Paws was founded in 2009 with a mission to reduce pet overpopulation and improve pet-family welfare on California’s Central Coast. By providing essential services to underserved communities, the nonprofit helps keep dogs and cats healthy, out of shelters, and with the people who love them. A Lifeline for Pets and Their Families Over 70% of U.S. households have a pet, and 95% consider them family. Yet, despite this deep bond, 20 million pets live in poverty, and 70% have never seen a vet—not due to neglect, but lack of access to affordable care. C.A.R.E.4Paws works directly in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, assisting low-income, senior, disabled, and unhoused pet families with: Free and low-cost veterinary care through two mobile clinics Pet food distribution to prevent hunger Behavioral training to help pets stay in their homes Temporary foster care and boarding for families in crisis, including those experiencing homelessness or domestic violence Each year, C.A.R.E.4Paws assists 30,000 pets. In 2024 alone, their Mobile Community Medicine & Spay/Neuter Outreach program helped 19,200 animals. Since the start of the pandemic, they have also distributed more than 5 million pet meals, ensuring pets can stay with their families where they belong. Keeping Pets and Families Together “For so many people, their pets are a lifeline and a source of unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship,” says Isabelle Gullö, Cofounder and Executive Director. “No one should have to choose between taking care of a four-legged family member and paying household bills, or be forced to give up a pet due to lack of housing or other traumatic life experiences. C.A.R.E.4Paws’ goal is to intervene before animals suffer or end up in shelters.” As the need for pet care continues to rise, C.A.R.E.4Paws remains committed to supporting those who need it most. Gullö shares, “Every day, we see firsthand what happens when people lack access to the services their animals need. We are here to help bridge a critical gap, one dog and cat at a time!” Empowering the Next Generation with Humane Education Beyond immediate support, C.A.R.E.4Paws works to create lasting change through its Paws Up For Pets youth initiative. This program encourages compassion for animals and all living beings, empowering young people to promote kindness in their communities and speak out against neglect or abuse. Learn moreA Mission Born from Service and Compassion Image credit: Northwest Battle Buddies Northwest Battle Buddies (NWBB) is dedicated to supporting Veterans in their journey toward healing and recovery by providing them with professionally trained service dogs. Founded in 2012 by Shannon Walker, Northwest Battle Buddies was born from a heartfelt desire to address the unique challenges Veterans face after serving in the armed forces. Many Veterans struggle with issues such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression, which can profoundly impact their quality of life. NWBB matches these Veterans with service dogs specially trained to provide comfort and support, helping restore a sense of purpose and belonging. Trained Dogs, Transformed Lives Shannon’s extensive experience as a dog trainer, combined with her deep understanding of canine behavior, revealed how uniquely equipped dogs are to help humans during times of need. Her father, Glenn Walker, served in the Korean War as an Airman 2nd Class and instilled in her a lasting message of patriotism and service. Every NWBB service dog undergoes five months of intensive training, followed by 160 hours of in-person instruction with their paired Veteran. To date, NWBB has transformed the lives of over 270 Veterans living with PTSD by providing them with loyal and highly trained canine partners. Their mission is especially urgent given the heartbreaking statistic that 20 Veterans die by suicide each day in the United States—often due to the unrelenting toll of PTSD. A Life-Changing Partnership: Nick and Jazz One powerful story that highlights NWBB’s impact features a Veteran named Nick and his service dog, Jazz. After returning from Iraq, Nick faced intense struggles adjusting to civilian life and turned to medication and alcohol to cope. Everything changed when he connected with NWBB and was paired with Jazz. “It’s better than any medication I’ve ever been on,” Nick said. Jazz not only provides daily emotional support but has also helped Nick re-engage with the world. Nick now shares his journey with others to show what’s possible when Veterans are given the tools to thrive. Ongoing Support and Community Involvement In addition to placing service dogs, NWBB provides essential support such as ongoing health checks and wellness care for both the dogs and their Veteran partners. Every dog is spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, and receives any necessary medical treatment to ensure long-term well-being. Community involvement is at the heart of NWBB’s success. The organization encourages support through donations, volunteering, or fostering service dogs in training. These contributions help extend their reach and change more lives. 4Knines Proudly Supports Northwest Battle Buddies 4Knines is proud to feature Northwest Battle Buddies in our Monthly Spotlight. Each month, we donate both products and a monetary contribution to a nonprofit making a difference in the lives of pets and their people. We are honored to support NWBB's mission and the Veterans they serve.
Learn moreTransforming Lives, One Dog at a Time Located in Peyton, Colorado, National Mill Dog Rescue (NMDR) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming discarded breeding dogs while educating the public about the harsh realities of the commercial dog breeding industry. Since its founding in 2007, NMDR has saved and cared for over 22,000 dogs, transforming thousands of lives in the process. Rehabilitation and Second Chances Each rescued dog undergoes a thorough rehabilitation process led by NMDR’s devoted team. This includes medical treatment, grooming, and behavioral support—critical steps for many dogs who may have never experienced proper care. Dogs like Rayna, who spent much of her life in a cage, finally get to experience the joy of running free, soaking up sunshine, and receiving love. Rayna’s adoption success story is a heartwarming reminder of the importance of NMDR’s mission. Expanding Their Reach NMDR’s impact continues to grow with the 2024 opening of a new location in Missouri. This expansion allows them to double the number of dogs they can save, offering a safe space for rescued animals and strengthening partnerships with rescue organizations on the East Coast.
