The organization is powered by a remarkable 930 active volunteers. These individuals are the heartbeat of the mission, showing up rain or shine to walk dogs, socialize cats, assist in adoptions, and help at the thrift boutique. Together, they are helping Furry Friends reimagine what’s possible in animal rescue.

 

Innovative Programs Beyond Traditional Rescue

What sets Furry Friends apart is not only what it does—but how it does it. Its programs go beyond traditional rescue: from relocating at-risk animals through the Lifesaving Relocation Program to transforming lives through the Shelter to Service Dog Program, the organization works to save animals while supporting veterans, seniors, and children. Its public veterinary clinic provides affordable, expert care—no pet is turned away, regardless of an owner's ability to pay.


Overcoming Challenges

Furry Friends is proud to be Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control’s #1 rescue partner, but its work has not been without hardship. In 2024, the Palm City Ranch site was severely damaged by a tornado during Hurricane Milton. Roofs were torn off, fencing destroyed, and critical structures reduced to debris. Despite these setbacks, the team has continued to show up every day—for the animals who depend on the organization.


Stories of Hope: Kenny’s Journey

One such animal is Kenny, a 3-year-old dog rescued from Palm Beach County. When he arrived, he was frozen in place, unable to move. X-rays revealed a BB pellet lodged in his neck, causing life-threatening tetanus. The shelter and medicine team worked around the clock, and thanks to months of care and the love of a foster family, Kenny took his first steps again. His story is a testament to what can be achieved through dedication and collaboration.

Due to the constant demands of shelter care, Furry Friends is in urgent need of commercial washers and dog beds. These essential items help provide clean, comfortable spaces for the animals—many of whom are recovering from trauma or illness. Older residential washers were previously used but cannot withstand the intensity of daily operations.

A casual footstep shakes your chest, a bus sounds like a jet engine, and hands reach down from the sky like cranes. Of course everything feels big. Helping a small dog grow brave isn’t about pushing them to “deal with it.” It’s about quietly showing them: You’re safe. I see you. I’ve got your back. Reward the Check-In Your dog will naturally look back at you for the treat. Pay well—small bits of cheese or chicken keep the game meaningful. 4. Repeat, Without Rushing Closer The pattern stays simple: See trigger → “Yes!” → treat → reset. Over time, many dogs spot a trigger and immediately whip their head toward you as if to say, “I saw it—snack time?” That shift—from fear to anticipation—is a massive emotional win. Be Your Small Dog’s Advocate in a Big-Dog World Sometimes the hardest part of living with a small dog isn’t the dog—it’s the people around you. A tiny, cute dog is basically a magnet. December 2025 Spotlight: The Street Dog Coalition

Founded in 2015 by Dr. Jon Geller, an emergency veterinarian in Fort Collins, Colorado, The Street Dog Coalition was created from a simple but powerful idea: pets are family, and people experiencing homelessness deserve the support to keep them safe and healthy. What began as a small outreach effort has grown into a national movement with more than 55 volunteer-run teams across the country, providing free veterinary care to pets of those experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Their Mission and Services The Street Dog Coalition hosts free pop-up clinics where pet parents can access exams, vaccines, spay/neuter vouchers, flea/tick and heartworm prevention, microchipping, and more. By meeting both pets and people with dignity and respect, they work to strengthen the human-animal bond while ensuring no one is left behind. A pet parent seen in Nashville, TN shared their gratitude: “We were able to get such excellent help. Our animals absolutely love everyone at the clinic, they have always had nothing but compliments for my babies. We finally have an apartment and could not have gotten our vet care for our babies through this time being homeless if it wasn't for Street Dog. People said, pay it forward. That's what I am doing now.” Stories of Impact The Street Dog Coalition’s clinics are powered entirely by volunteers—veterinarians, technicians, assistants, and caring community members. Their compassion goes beyond medical care. One volunteer recalled: “A young woman walked in. She had a small scraggly dog in her arms. The dog’s name was Sassy, she was living in a van with her mom. Sassy’s mom was wearing a coat, pajama bottoms and slippers. She was not wearing socks. It was January in Colorado. She did not look up when the volunteer approached her. Her head was lowered. Over that hour I saw Sassy’s mom begin to smile, ask questions and relax. A volunteer saw she was not wearing socks, and helped her pick out several pairs that had been donated. Sassy got her shots and a follow up appointment scheduled. Sassy’s mom was beaming when she left, thanking the team. It always happens this way. This transformation from being alienated and unwanted, to being valued and respected is what The Street Dog Coalition does best.” Another volunteer described why they keep coming back: “I understood why volunteers returned month after month. In a world that can feel isolating and cold, these clinics create a space where everyone belongs—where both pets and people are treated with compassion, respect, and care.” 10 Years of Compassion Now celebrating 10 years of service, The Street Dog Coalition continues to expand its reach, forging partnerships with human health providers and community organizations to offer holistic support.
