5 Myths About Dogs - BUSTED!

By JennaDrady. | Dog Info

There is so much we thought we knew years and years ago about our 4 legged companions.

5 Myths About Dogs - BUSTED! Over the years, so much has changed as we have learned more and more about them as time goes by. And I believe we still have much to learn. While some things still ring true today, there are many which are now considered myths. That being said, some people still swear by them. So, what is true and what is not? How are we suppose to know what is a myth and what is fiction? Let's take today and learn 5 myths about dogs which have been - BUSTED!

1. MYTH - Dogs Are Color Blind

BUSTED! Dogs are not completely color blind. The color range a dog has, comes no where near what we as humans see. However, they do have the ability to see mostly yellows, blues and violet. To get a bit more technical - dogs and humans both have two types of photoreceptors (rods and cones). The human eye has more types of cones while the canine eye has more rods. Also, dogs do not have what is called fovea. Fovea produces those sharp visual details that humans can see. Which is also why dogs have amazing night vision compared to us.

2. MYTH - If a Dog Is Wagging His Tail, It Means He Is Happy

BUSTED! I mean... yes a dog wags his tail when he is happy, but that is not always the case. Tail wagging can mean so many other things. You just have to be able to read the rest of the dog's actions, look at his eyes, his behavior etc... Tail wagging can be a sign of a dog feeling anxious, fearful, nervous, and so forth.

3. MYTH - Only Male Dogs Will Hump Other Dogs

BUSTED! This myth might be a better-known one nowadays, but it was believed long ago that only a male dog would show such behavior. Males can hump other males, males can hump females, AND females can hump males, and females can hump other females. It can also be a behavior signal rather than a "let's get it on." Research tells us females will do this in an act of dominance however they will do it if they are feeling frisky, playful etc...

4. MYTH - Dogs Who Eat Grass Are Sick

BUSTED! Yes.... and no... see, dogs can be known to eat a large amount of grass in order to help themselves get something icky out of their tummy, but there are some pooches out there who simply like to graze. Some like the taste, weird, but true. You do want to make sure if your dog is a grazer, to keep him away from areas which might have grass that has been treated with anything.

5. MYTH - A Dog's Mouth Is Cleaner Than a Humans

BUSTED! Even though most germs in a dog's mouth are not harmful to humans, there is still much to be said about this one. Did you know by the age of 4, 80% of all dogs will have some form of gum disease? What a whopping huge number! So let's think for a second. Humans (most) brush their teeth twice a day, floss to get all the yuck out of our teeth and follow up with regular dental visits and cleanings. So technically your dog's mouth widely depends on how you care for it. That being said, even if you brush your dog's teeth twice a day, take him to the vet for regular teeth cleanings etc... the fact still remains that a dog is a dog is a dog. Dogs lick their butt, they eat nasty things, I mean... they are dogs! So is a dog's mouth cleaner than a humans? I would say no, but keeping his teeth well kept is always a good idea. Following up on myth number 5, I found a cool fact while I was doing research and I wanted to share it with you. Myth #5 says a dog's mouth is cleaner than a humans. Have you ever wondered where that bit of information came from? Well... Veterinarian and author of Chicken Soup for the Dog Owner's Soul, Marty Becker says that he believes it comes from a dog licking their own wounds. When a dog licks his wounds, they do tend to heal faster. But this is because it helps get rid of dead tissue quicker. The same sort of idea as for when we humans have surgery and the doctors clean the wounds out, getting rid of the dead tissue in order for the skin to heal. So sadly... there is no magic doggie tongue that heals wounds fast. Their instinct simply tells them to clean the area of a wound to help it heal. Did you enjoy our myth busting post?
