November 2026 Spotlight: Southern Maryland K-9 Search & Recovery

Dedicated to Finding the Missing

Southern Maryland K-9 Search & Recovery (SMK9) is a nonprofit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to assisting with missing-person searches and recovery efforts throughout Maryland and the surrounding states. Driven by a commitment to service, compassion, and professionalism, SMK9 brings together trained K-9 handlers and their canine partners to provide specialized search capabilities for law enforcement and emergency response agencies when families and communities need them most.

SMK9 grew from a shared passion for search and rescue and a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Building on the experience and dedication of its founding members, the organization continues to develop its capabilities, strengthen community partnerships, and prepare its teams for the challenges of real-world search operations through weekly training and outside seminar opportunities throughout the U.S. As a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, SMK9 relies on the commitment of its volunteers and the generosity of community supporters to advance its mission.

Specialized Search and Recovery Capabilities

The organization’s capabilities include live-find searches for missing individuals and human remains detection (HRD). Depending on the mission, its K-9 teams may assist in wilderness searches, open-water and shoreline searches, vehicle and building searches, and specialized fire and crime scene searches. Each team requires extensive training, a strong handler-dog partnership, and continual practice to maintain nationally recognized certifications and operational readiness.

Compassion for Families and Communities

Behind every search is a person who matters and a family hoping for answers. SMK9 recognizes that missing-person incidents can bring uncertainty and heartbreak, and its volunteers are committed to serving with compassion, respect, and dedication.

Southern Maryland K-9 Search & Recovery is proud to serve Maryland and the surrounding states. Through the dedication of its handlers, the abilities of its canine partners, and the support of its community, SMK9 remains committed to one shared purpose:

“We do these things so that others may live.”

How the Community Can Help

As a volunteer-supported nonprofit, SMK9 welcomes community involvement. Donations help offset the costs of canine training, certifications, specialized equipment, safety supplies, and deployment readiness. Community members can also help by sharing the organization’s mission, supporting fundraising initiatives, and building awareness of its services.
