What dog owners told us, what reviewers of 7 competing products reported, and how the 4Knines Hard Bottom Seat Extender gives you the best of both worlds.
Our survey: Of 178 people we surveyed on Facebook and Instagram (October 2 to 9, 2026), 74.7% prefer removable door guards and only 7.3% want no door guards at all.
Our review analysis: We read 2,078 Amazon reviews of 7 competing seat covers with built-in, window-mounted door guards. 952 discussed the door guards, and 425 of those (44.6%) were negative or mixed. The top problems: window inserts and Velcro (57.6%), guards that fall off (38.1%) and poor fit (26.1%).
Our answer: EZ Open door guards on the 4Knines Hard Bottom Seat Extender protect your doors without attaching to the door or window, pivot open with one zip for your dog, and come off whenever you want. The best of both worlds.
Most dog owners cover the back seat and call it done. But watch your dog on the next ride. They lean on the door panel at every turn, press their paws on the armrest to look outside, and scramble across the trim as they jump in or out. Claw marks, drool and mud end up on the door, and scratched trim doesn't wipe clean.
That's why door guards exist, and why so many seat covers now come with them. But we didn't want to build ours based on assumptions. Before finalizing the door guards on the 4Knines Hard Bottom Seat Extender, we went to two sources: dog owners themselves, and the people who had already bought and reviewed the alternatives.
We ran two separate studies because they answer different questions, so we report them separately.
178 responses from a Facebook and Instagram survey that ran October 2 to 9, 2026, concluding Friday, October 9. We wrote the questions and collected every answer ourselves.

Reviews that discussed the door guards
We asked respondents a simple question: which would you rather have with your dog's back seat cover?
178 respondents, October 2 to 9, 2026
Counts: removable 133, built-in 32, none 13.
Almost everyone wants door protection. 165 of 178 respondents (92.7%) chose a door guard option. Only 13 (7.3%) said they don't want door guards.
Removable wins by more than 4 to 1. 133 respondents chose removable guards and 32 chose built-in guards. Among people who picked a door guard, 80.6% picked removable.
Most people have never used door guards. We also asked about experience, and 127 of 178 respondents (71.3%) had never used door guards. 37 (20.8%) use them regularly, and 14 (7.9%) used them before but rarely use them now or stopped.
| Respondent group | Prefer removable | Prefer built-in | No guards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Never used door guards (127) | 78.7% | 13.4% | 7.9% |
| Use door guards regularly (37) | 59.5% | 35.1% | 5.4% |
| Rarely use or stopped (14) | 78.6% | 14.3% | 7.1% |
| All respondents (178) | 74.7% | 18.0% | 7.3% |
Removable guards lead in every group. But among people who use door guards regularly, about a third prefer guards built into the seat cover. Experienced users seem to value protection that's always there. That told us the right design shouldn't force a choice between built-in convenience and removable flexibility.
The people who rarely use their door guards or gave up on them strongly prefer removable designs (11 of 14). The survey didn't ask why they stopped. Our review analysis helps answer that.
Next, we looked at what happens after people buy built-in door guards. We analyzed every 1 to 4 star review of 7 competing dog seat covers and seat extenders on Amazon.com, plus every 5-star review that mentions a door or window. Each product's door guards attach at the window: a plastic insert slides into the window channel, and the guard hangs from it with Velcro.
How the review set narrows down
97.2% of the 952 door-guard reviews (925) were verified purchases. Reviews dated October 7, 2023 to October 3, 2026.
Of the 2,078 reviews we read, 952 discussed the door guards specifically. Of those 952 reviews, 425 were negative or mixed about the guards. That's 44.6%, or nearly half. 291 were negative and 134 were mixed, meaning the buyer praised something and complained about something else.
Sentiment about the door guards specifically, not the seat cover overall
This isn't one bad product. Three products from the category's leading brand drew 910 door-guard reviews, 44.7% negative or mixed. Four newer listings from other brands drew 42, 42.9% negative or mixed. Different brands, same window-mounted design, almost the same result.
Many of these complaints came from people who liked the product overall. 221 of the 425 negative or mixed door-guard reviews (52.0%) still gave the product 4 or 5 stars. They liked the seat cover. They had trouble with the door guards. And 24 reviewers said they removed the guards or stopped using them entirely.
We sorted the 425 negative or mixed reviews by the problems they described. Many reviews named more than one, so the 425 reviews raised 617 problems in total, and the shares below add up to more than 100%.
Share of the 425 reviews raising each problem
Counts: inserts or Velcro 245, falls off 162, fit 111, gets in the way 34, install 33, durability 22, looks cheap 10 (617 total). *Scratching (98) and tint (74) are separate keyword counts.
The top problem by far. The insert sits in a window channel built for glass, not a door guard. When the window moves, it shifts. When the dog leans, the Velcro takes the load.
A door guard on the floor protects nothing.
Window channels vary by vehicle, and some reviewers ended up trimming the product.
The most costly problem. Across all 952 door-guard reviews, 118 mentioned scratching of the window, glass or tint, and 83 mentioned tint. A product bought to protect your vehicle shouldn't put the windows at risk.
"it did save me money on my door, it has now cost me money on my window"
Verified Amazon buyer of a competing seat cover, 1 star
"Door covers come off almost every time you open the door, the window insert that holds them up slips in, and out, easily"
Verified Amazon buyer of a competing seat cover, 4 stars
"the Velcro plastic inserts will scratch and ruin your expensive window tints"
Verified Amazon buyer of a competing seat cover, 2 stars
"I wish the car door covers were removable"
Verified Amazon buyer of a competing seat cover, 5 stars
When door guards work, people love them. Of the 522 positive door-guard reviews, 454 (87.0%) praised how well the guards protect the doors. Even 60 of the 425 critics said the protection itself was good. The problem isn't door protection. It's how the guards attach.
Problem 1: Attachment. Window-mounted guards slip, fall off, don't fit and can scratch windows. The top three review complaints all trace back to the window mount.
Problem 2: Flexibility. Three out of four people we surveyed prefer removable guards, but a third of regular users like guards that come built in. Most products make you pick one.
We designed the EZ Open door guards on the 4Knines Hard Bottom Seat Extender to solve both problems at once.
EZ Open guards cover your door panels without attaching to the door or window. No window inserts and no Velcro hanging from the glass, which removes the source of the top review complaints.
Our patent-pending pivot design opens with one zip, so your dog can jump in and out easily. Zip it closed and the door is covered again.
Don't need door protection today? Take the guards off. Put them back when you do. You choose, not the seat cover.
That's what "the best of both worlds" means. If you're one of the 74.7% who want removable guards, EZ Open comes off whenever you like. If you're one of the experienced users who value built-in protection, EZ Open comes with your seat extender, so there's nothing extra to buy or install. And either way, your windows stay clear of inserts and Velcro.

Yes. You can keep them on for door protection or take them off when you don't need them. In our survey of 178 people, 74.7% said they prefer removable door guards.
We analyzed 2,078 Amazon reviews of 7 competing products. Of the 952 reviews that discussed the door guards, 425 (44.6%) were negative or mixed. The top problems were window inserts or Velcro (57.6%), guards that fall off (38.1%) and poor fit (26.1%).
In our survey of 178 people, 92.7% chose a door guard option and only 7.3% said they don't want door guards.
Our survey showed that people want door protection, and most want the freedom to remove it. Our analysis of 2,078 reviews across 7 competing products showed that nearly half of the reviews discussing built-in door guards were negative or mixed, and most of the problems came from guards that hang from the window.
So we built EZ Open door guards to fix both. They protect your doors without attaching to your door or window. They pivot open with one zip so your dog can jump in and out. And when you don't want them, they come off. Add a reinforced hard bottom platform, the K9-Shield® waterproof layer and built to last, and you have a seat extender built around what dog owners told us. If you're shopping for a hard bottom seat extender with door guards, the 4Knines Hard Bottom Seat Extender is the one to get.
