4 Things Pet Parents Should Consider for Summer Travel

By RachelSheppard. | Traveling with Dogs

Have you ever traveled with your dog before? If you have, you will know that there are a lot of things to consider when traveling with a pet for any length of time.

4 Things Pet Parents Should Consider for Summer Travel As this past weekend was the unofficial start of summer and pet parents are getting ready to plan road trips and summer vacations, I thought I would point out a few extra things that might make your summer travels a little smoother.

1) Crates Are an Excellent Training Tool and Safety Device

When we took a long road trip with Rooney last year we brought his crate in the car and had him secured in there so that he was safe in the event we experienced an accident. Not only did we feel better knowing that Rooney was more secure in the car, but the crate also kept Rooney quiet. See, Rooney doesn't particularly like traffic and sometimes can get vocal in the car if he feels like we are moving too slowly. However, if he is in the crate in the car, he never makes a sound, and that makes everyone in the car feel a little better about traffic.

2) Bring Extra Water!

In the summer months it can get hot in the car very quickly. And while you are going to keep the car cool while you are driving, potty breaks and gas station visits are times when the temperature in the car can rise quickly. Therefore, keep extra water available for your dog at all times to keep them hydrated. I highly recommend the Gulpy as a travel water bottle for dogs. Not only is it easy to refill on the go, but it also makes it easy to provide your dog with water while the car is still moving. Additionally, it may seem inconvenient, but you will want to schedule additional potty breaks to accommodate the increased water intake for your pet.

3) Don't Forget the AC!

Occasionally pet parents opt to secure their pet in a crate in the back of the car, which is an excellent and safe way for your pet to travel. However, in the summer, the location of the crate makes it harder to keep your pet cool unless you have rear AC control. Therefore, it is very important to make sure that you are able to monitor and cool the back of your car so that your dog isn't left in hotter than normal temperatures.

4) Cooling Pads Might Be Necessary

No matter the AC situation, you may want to consider bringing a cooling pad with you on your trip so that your pet can stay cool no matter where the are located and no matter how warm your destination. Even with the AC blasting, if you are sitting in direct sunlight in 100+ degree weather in the car, you are going to feel warm. Therefore, take every precaution possible to keep your pet cool while you are traveling in the car. While it may seem excessive to take these additional precautions to keep your pet cool, you will be grateful that you don't have to worry about your pet overheating as you are driving and enjoying the summer weather. Additionally, you will feel very grateful that you took these extra steps in the event that your car breaks down in a warm weather area. What precautions do you take on summer road trips?  Happy Traveling! Great product!

Does exactly what we wanted. We can easily raise a part of the seat to give our dogs better access to the rear seat of our pickup. And it's easily removed or installed when we need to put humans back there!
