5 Tips to Keep Your Dog Cool This Summer

Summer is here and that means it's going to be hot outside! While us humans look for ways to stay cool and beat the heat ourselves this summer, we shouldn't forget about our furry canine companions.

Summer Time With Your Pet DogDogs can suffer from a number of heat-related injuries, so it's important to be mindful of their needs and keep them cool and hydrated when it's hot outside. Here are 5 summer safety tips to help keep your dog cool this summer:

1. Make Sure Your Dog Stays Hydrated

Of course, your dog is going to need plenty of fresh water available to stay hydrated this Summer. You may find yourself filling her water bowl more often than usual when it's hot out. You can keep your dog hydrated by keeping her water bowl full. Keep a bowl outside if she is going to be spending any time in the yard. When you go for walks or other adventures, bring along a water dish and pack extra water for your dog to drink.

2. Stay Cool in the Shade

Plan to take your walks during the coolest times of the day. Morning and evening walks will be cooler for both of you and will help prevent your dog from suffering heat exhaustion. If it's hot outside when you're walking, try to stay in shady areas as much as you possibly can. This will help keep them cool and protect their paw pads from becoming burned.

3. Protect the Paws

Speaking of paw pads, did you know that a dog can burn them just by simply walking over hot surfaces like concrete? As a rule of thumb, if it's too hot for you to stand on while barefoot then it's too hot for your dog as well. You can protect your dog's paw pads by walking in the shade, having them wear protective boots, or avoiding hot surfaces all together. Try taking your walks in grassy areas rather than paved areas.

4. Don't Leave Your Dog Alone in a Hot Car

I know many of us see this warning every day, but dogs continue to become injured or killed by being left alone inside of hot cars while their humans run errands. If you are going to run errands, just leave your dog at home if you cannot bring them inside of the stores. It's just safer this way.

5. Grooming

Most people start sweating just thinking about how hot their dog must be with all of their fur. Their first instinct may be to get their dog shaved by a groomer. Many experts advise against shaving certain breeds of dogs. A dog's fur coat is made to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Consult with your dog's groomer to see what they recommend.

Puppy misadventure

My 8 month old lab puppy ate something and it required a trip to the vet. They administered peroxide to induce vomiting. He seemed unaffected by the entire experience and after waiting 45 minutes with no results, we were sent home. Naturally, he threw up in the car on the way home. I had recently bought the split rear seat cover. It saved the back seat of my car and cleaned up beautifully. I can only imagine how the cloth seat would have absorbed the odor and stain without the protection of the seat cover. Buying your seat cover was the smartest decision I've made. Love the hammock option.

XL rear seat hammock cover

I own a 2015 Toyota Tundra CrewMax. I was concerned that the XL seat cover wouldn't be big enough for our pups. However, after installing it easily, our pups took to it immediately! Ellie loved the hammock part that comes off the seat a little and slept in it on one of our most recent road trips.

Perfect Fit!

We had fallen back to just putting a sheet over our seats as our Bernese Mountain Dog and our cars never found a perfect match with any of the seat covers we tried until this front seat cover. We immediately put in an order for the backseat cover from 4Knines to give our BMD more room.

I ordered a dog cover for my rear seat. When I placed it, one of the straps was not holding tight so I sent an email to the company that day. I received an immediate response and an immediate replacement. I was so impressed! I love the no hammock cover. It's perfect!
