A Dog's Nose Knows What a Dog's Nose Knows!

By JennaDrady. | Dog Info Dog Health

The nose of a dog is nothing less than remarkable. Dogs see the whole world with their noses. They explore with it, they find things with it, they can sniff out just about anything with it!

Dog's Nose and What It Can Do. For certain dog breeds, their whole lives revolve around their noses - for instance, police dogs who have been trained to sniff out narcotics and/or weapons have extremely important jobs with their nose. Even for our pet dogs, their nose is their world. When I see my huskies sniffing around the house or the yard, I often wonder exactly what smells they are picking up. So I decided to do a little bit of research on the subject. One of the things I learned is there is no scientific research on exactly how much stronger a dog's nose is than a human's. The numbers I found ranged from 1,000 to 10,000,000 times stronger than humans, depending on the breed of dog. WOW, that is a lot stronger than our noses, that's for sure! Our dogs will not only use their noses to find things, and see who's been around the area, they also use their noses for inspecting, and taking comfort in smelling things that are familiar to them - such as us humans, or their surroundings. Ever notice that your dog will sniff the area which he is about to lay down in? He is inspecting the area as we would with our eyes before laying, or sitting down. Dog's Nose and SniffingDogs also love the smell of their humans. They know our scents and I believe they find comfort in that. My huskies also like to do yard inspections. Every time they go out for a bathroom break, each of them sniff out their own areas before they will go.

Here Are Some Quick Side Facts About Your Dog's Nose:

Did You Know?
  • The wetness (mucus) on a dog's nose is used to help capture scent particles? It's true. You will often notice a dog will lick his nose if it becomes dry. They want to keep that wetness there so they don't miss a beat! Or... a smell, I should say.
  • Most people still go by that old thought where if a dog's nose is dry, that means they must be sick. However, this is simply not true. A myth even. There are many reasons your dog's nose could be dry. Temperature, the amount of water they have had, how much they have licked their nose at that particular time, and the list goes on. A better way to judge if your dog may not be feeling well using their nose, is to watch for changes in mucus secretion. Thicker, change of color, etc...
  • Above, I mentioned dogs licking their noses. I'm sure you have noticed your pooch licking their nose quite often through the day, but have you ever wondered why? Not only do they want to keep their noses nice and wet so the moisture can take in all the scents around them, but dogs will also sample their smells. Sounds weird right? But it's true! As the wetness on their nose absorbs the smells around them, they will lick it off their noses so that the olfactory glands on the roof of their mouth can actually taste what they are smelling.
  • Something that I learned, and found pretty interesting is that the wetness and temperature of your dog's nose can also depend on which breed they are. Some dogs just naturally have colder wetter noses then others!
So next time your furry friend greets you with that cold wet nose being all up in your business, just remember, your dog's nose is their world! Do you have any wet nose stories to share? Dog's Nose and Dog Seat Covers: Cargo, Dog Bed Liner, Bed Cover: 30% Off Premium Seat Covers
