Tragically, hundreds of friendly, well-behaved dogs are euthanized every day. Far too many senior dogs are abandoned at local shelters for a variety of reasons including a caretaker’s death or illness, relocation, working long hours, family dynamics, or unexpected financial circumstances. Some dogs of advanced age are in poor health as well. Their stories range from the heartbreaking to the heartwarming, but the sad reality is that older pets are often the last to be adopted from traditional shelter systems.
In 2007, Sherri Franklin, longtime animal advocate and rescue worker, decided to do something to improve the lives of senior dogs who would otherwise be doomed to the high-kill shelters of San Francisco. Sherri started a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Muttville, whose mission includes:
“Changing the way the world thinks about and treats older dogs, aged seven years and older, and to creating better lives for them through rescue, foster, adoption, and hospice.”
Muttville works with shelters and other animal organizations to rescue senior dogs that are not likely to find homes. Through outreach and networking, Muttville works tirelessly to find suitable new homes for these dogs. On a local level, Muttville operates a cage-free facility, which houses newly rescued senior dogs awaiting foster care (or hospice care if needed). On a global level, Muttville provides information about caring for older dogs and offers support to human caregivers.
Muttville’s senior canines are often perfect companions for senior humans. Their Seniors for Seniors program matches mellow, well-socialized senior dogs with a senior human companion. Muttville waives its adoption fee on all Seniors for Seniors adoptions. In addition, Muttville mutts receive a wellness exam and any necessary vaccinations from a veterinarian. If a senior caretaker should become unable to care for their furry companion, Muttville reassumes care of the senior canine. Studies show that people experience real health benefits when they welcome a dog into their lives, and Muttville has shared many success stories from seniors whose lives have been forever changed through this Seniors for Seniors experience!
Muttville would love to see a world in which no dog spends his last days in a cold, dark shelter.
These senior dogs have much love to give and joy to share! You can help save a life today. With your donation, Muttville can continue its lifesaving efforts. There are MANY ways to contribute to the ongoing success of this great nonprofit.
