We all love our dogs and want them to live forever, right?? Until we find the fountain of youth for canines, our dogs will never live nearly as long as we want.
Luckily, there are a few things we can do to help them live longer, more fulfilling lives. Follow these 5 basics and your dog will be on the path to longevity for sure.
1. Get Them Moving
Regular exercise will help keep your dog’s mind and body healthy. Just 20 minute walks a day will turn back the hands of time. A little exercise each day is better than weekend warrior style with nothing during the week. Dogs thrive on getting out for a walk and a good sniff around the neighborhood. They love to sniff. Using their nose is often the highlight of their walks. Just letting your dog out in the backyard is not enough daily exercise for them.
Some lower energy dogs would lay around all day if they had the choice. High energy dogs get bored easily and usually get themselves into trouble if they are not getting the activity that they need. As a result, your dog needs you to add some daily structured exercise to their daily routine. The exact amount of exercise your dog should be getting depends on his breed and size, so do a little online research or chat with other dog owners to see what works best. Daily walks/playtime is not only good for your dog, but is also good for your health too. Give it a try!
2. Regular Vet Checkups
Just like humans, dogs need regular visits with doctor to stay healthy. Regular check-ups and the appropriate vaccinations are important prevention. If you have a puppy, an older dog with health issues, or a dog that has a chronic condition, frequent Vet visits are a must in order to monitor their overall health and well-being.
Sometimes health issues start out as being very subtle, so it’s important to be observant and proactive. Some signs to be on the look out for would be sudden onset of: decreased appetite, decreased water intake, lethargy, low energy, whimpering, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. If your pet exhibits any of these signs you will want to get them into the Veterinarian as soon as possible. Remember, it’s through early diagnosis and treatment that health issues can be managed easily, and are much less costly to cure.
3. Optimal Nutrition
The right nutrition plays a very important role in the longevity of your dog. There are many options when it comes to choosing the right diet for your doggy-whether it’s a home cooked meal, a raw diet, canned food, a kibble diet, or a combination of all of these…You will want to decide what best suits your lifestyle, your budget, what your dog prefers, what is best for your dog, and what is the most realistic.
Many people prefer the convenience of a kibble diet for their dogs. If you choose this type of diet for your dog you will want to make sure you avoid:
- Animal by-products
- Companies that have been on the FDA’s recall list
- Corn, Soy, Wheat, Wheat Gluten
- Artificial Colors and Ingredients
4. Watch Their Weight
Dogs can pack on the pounds very quickly especially as they get older. In order to help them live a longer life, you will want to keep their weight within normal range. It is estimated that nearly 45% of all dogs are overweight. That’s 35 million dogs. That is a huge number of dogs!!
Obesity in dogs can lead to numerous health problems throughout their life some of these include: diabetes, joint pain, arthritis, cancerous tumors, high blood pressure, and heart disease. If you feel your dog is overweight, ask your Veterinarian to help you calculate a reasonable caloric intake for your dog. Then determine the appropriate diet for your furry family member and stick to it. You can add years to your dog’s life by just maintaining your dog’s ideal weight.
5. Don’t Forget Lots of Love
However long your pup lives, love ’em and love ’em good. There’s only one pup in the world that’s yours, so cherish the time you have with them! They love us unconditionally and add so much joy in our lives. Your dog deserves all of that love in return. Don’t forget, loving and caring for your dog can add years to your life too.
