4 Ways to Stay Connected With Your Dog While You Travel

Stay Connected With Your Pet Dog While You Are AwayFor many of us, our dogs simply can’t travel everywhere we go.

If you are anything like me, you simply won’t fly your dog in cargo unless you have no other option and have to transport them. Which means that you may take vacations or work trips, and you won’t be able to bring your dog.

Not being able to bring Rooney with me makes me miss him tremendously when I am gone. Therefore, I try to think of ways to stay connected with him when I travel.

Here Are a Few of My Favorite Ideas:

1. Flat Pet

BlogPaws is a large annual pet blogging conference. Each year, the conference is on a different coast to allow bloggers the opportunity to bring their dogs with them and drive to the conference.

You may be asking yourself, what’s a flat pet?

A flat pet is simply a picture of your dog that is printed on cardboard. Here is a flat pet version of Bentley from Barking from the Bayou, with Tillman the skateboarding Bulldog.

Bringing your flat pet allows your dog to take part in the memories you capture from your travels.

2. Exchanging Pictures

If I am traveling with my family, we usually have Rooney stay with a friend or a pet sitter. When that happens, I request that I get daily pictures of Rooney. Mostly because it brings me peace of mind, but also because it’s just an excuse to see his glowing face. It may sound silly, but it helps me feel closer to him while I am gone.

3. Communicate

If you feel like it will help your dog (i.e. not give them anxiety) to hear your voice while you are away, you can set up a call or use a Bluetooth camera to communicate with your pet while you’re gone. These days, technology allows us to remain connected with our pet. For example, the Petcube camera allows you to check in on your pet and communicate through their two-way audio system.

4. Bring Them Gifts

As a pet parent, I love to spoil Rooney. One of my favorite things to do when I travel is bring him home a new toy or treat when I return. Not only does this make my return home a little more exciting, but it also creates a positive association with my suitcase. Therefore, decreasing the anxiety associated with the thought of me leaving.

Those are some of my ideas, but I would love to hear yours! Do you travel often? How do you stay connected with your pet while you are away?
