March 2020 Charity Spotlight | Valor Service Dogs

Specializing in supporting post-9/11 veterans, Valor Service Dogs empowers wounded veterans and first responders through the support of specially-trained service dog partners.

These dogs help America’s heroes regain independence and transition to civilian life. Valor Service Dogs are trained to offer both physical and psychological support, offering a lifeline to veterans dealing with mobility issues and/or post traumatic stress disorder.

These dogs help America’s heroes regain independence and transition to civilian life. Valor Service Dogs are trained to offer both physical and psychological support, offering a lifeline to veterans dealing with mobility issues and/or post traumatic stress disorder.

Tens of thousands of service members suffered traumatic brain injuries and/or PTSD due to deployments in Operations New Dawn, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. Thousands received wounds requiring amputation. Valor Service Dogs recently expanded their program to offer services to first responders, believing this was an underserved group of heroes.

Valor Service Dogs are trained to recognize signs of stress and anxiety and then interrupt these negative emotions by initiating contact with their handler, allowing the handler to work through the emotions in a more positive way. Mobility service dogs are trained to operate light switches, open and close doors, act as a brace, find and retrieve items, pull wheelchairs, and other tasks unique to a person’s mobility needs.

Carol Lansford founded Valor Service Dogs because she understands the challenges facing wounded veterans and their families. She and her husband, a wounded combat veteran with permanent physical disabilities, committed to partnering eligible service members with a life-changing service dog. Carol was one of the few service dog training instructors at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. She brings best-in-class training techniques to Valor Service Dogs.

The demand for service dogs is growing. The spectrum of injuries suffered by service members and first responders is vast, and Valor Service Dogs is responding to the ever-changing needs. Misinformation and a lack of understanding can create stressful situations for both the dog and the handler. The Valor Service Dog team educates the general public about service dogs, their training, and the laws that allow service dogs to be active members of society.

Over the years, 4Knines has donated seat covers and other products to help support the work of Valor Service Dogs. This month, we are proud to feature this fabulous nonprofit in our Monthly Spotlight. Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with Valor Service Dogs and  consider contributing to their mission.
