February Charity Spotlight on Marley’s Mutts

Marley's Mutts: 4Knines Charity Spotlight February 2016All Breeds, All Creeds Welcome. The giant Mastiff. The mangy mutt. The aggressive. The scared. All are welcome at Marley’s Mutts, a unique organization dedicated to rescuing “undesirable” incarcerated canines from shelters in outlying areas with euthanasia rates of nearly 100%.

As a recognized and decorated 501(c)3 non-profit, Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue has an unwavering mission: to rescue, rehabilitate, train, and re-home death row dogs from Kern County’s overcrowded shelters. These dogs have been abandoned, lost, neglected, discarded, or abused. As their rescuers, their voice, and their future, Marley’s Mutts desire is to save and serve as many as they possibly can.

Second Chances

Zach Skow, founder and executive director of Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescues, believes in second chances. After being diagnosed with end stage liver disease in July of 2008 caused by years of alcohol abuse, Zach felt worthless and unwanted – like a throwaway human. Vulnerable and scared, Zach realized his life was much like the “lost causes” he worked with at the Humane Society. Motivated by his personal experience, Zach identified a significant flaw in the shelter system – no one was willing to take on the toughest cases. In October of 2008, Zach vowed to live his life without the crutch of alcohol, and this decision coincided with the inception of Marley’s Mutts.  Today, Zach is healthy, and he credits his connection with dogs with saving his life.

Big Dogs Are Not Mean Dogs

Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue is committed to changing the conversation surrounding the destitute and unwanted dogs found in high-kill shelters. Zach describes Marley, his Pitbull/Rottweiler mix, as a gentle, kind, and loving dog who can lick a child clean in one minute flat! Unfortunately, irresponsible dog owners sometimes train large breeds to act aggressively, perpetuating the myth that powerful, intimidating looking dogs are inherently “scary.” Large breed rescues are the innocent victims of their circumstances, and the dedicated Marley Mutts team is working to rehabilitate these dogs both behaviorally and physically, focusing on transforming every dog into an adoptable companion (with an adoption success rate of 99%) and, in some instances, Certified Therapy Dogs.

Miracle Mutts

In addition to rescue work, Marley’s Mutts is also committed to Community Outreach and Education. The Miracle Mutts crew INVESTS in bringing innovative programs to the community. Utilizing the power of the human-canine bond, Certified Therapy Dogs provide comfort, emotional and social enrichment, educational programs, and job-skills training to a diverse population of children, teens, and adults across Kern County. Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue is the first and only dog rescue sanctioned by the AKC to award Therapy Dog Certification to deserving human-canine teams.

Marley’s Adoptable Mutts

Many of the dogs in Marley’s Mutts care have experienced unspeakable abuse, but their stories are told with compassion, love, and respect. Maintaining a positive outlook, Marley’s Mutts presents a hopeful message and invites the dog-loving community to join their cause. Followers and supporters of Marley’s Mutts fall in love with every underdog and root for their successful adoption. Zack and his team have built a phenomenal network of supporters and foster families. Marley’s Mutts inspirational success stories can be found on their website, on their Facebook page, with nearly 500,000 followers, and other social media channels.

Mutt Militia

The success of Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue is only possible because of the generosity of the Mutt Militia, a group of donors and supporters who are the lifeblood of the organization. There are MANY ways to help, including making cash donations, supporting their online store, purchasing items from their Amazon Wish List, or donating via Amazon’s Smile. In addition, Marley’s Mutts is always in need of volunteers and foster families.
