Founded in November 2015, Lil Bit of Love was named for a 4-week old Chihuahua named “Lil Bit.” The pup weighed only five ounces and had been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, an underdeveloped heart, and weak lungs. Nicole, Lil Bit’s foster “mom,” was told he would live only 24 hours, but she refused to accept this. She provided Lil Bit with plenty of love and attention, and to everyone’s surprise, Lil Bit lived for three-and-a-half wonderful weeks before leaving this world. Because of Nicole’s nurturing care, Lil Bit learned to walk, eat, and play during his short time on Earth.
After Lil Bit passed away, Nicole formed the Lil Bit of Love Rescue. Nicole believes that while many extraordinary dogs may have broken parts, they all have very special hearts. Lil Bit of Love relies on volunteer foster families to give special-needs dogs the opportunity to live a life filled with love and happiness. A large percentage of dogs taken in by the rescue are sick or injured, leaving them overlooked in the shelter. Once the dogs receive much-needed medical care and are nursed back to health by loving foster families, they are made available for adoption and placed in new, forever homes.
In 2017, Lil Bit of Love was able to include cats and kittens in their foster-based rescue program. With a full complement of cats fosters, the rescue has been wonderfully successful in finding loving homes for these furry darlings.
