Siberian Huskies are an amazing breed. And no, i’m not just saying that because I happen to be owned by 3 of them.
Huskies are unique, gorgeous, stubborn, and just an all around fun dog to be around. But lets put those facts aside for a moment and talk about why Siberian Huskies grew to be so popular.
- T.V shows such as Game Of Thrones and Twilight are blamed for the growing of Siberian Husky popularity.
- In the past 5 years, there has been a HUGE 700% rise in Siberian Huskies and other “wolf like” breeds being abandoned or surrendered.
- The Siberian Husky Welfare Association claims to have struggled handling DOZENS of calls each week with people wanting to offload their huskies, and other snow dogs.
“But, huskies are so beautiful, so loving and friendly.”
This may be true, but a Siberian Husky is not for everyone, and definitely not fit for a first time dog owner.
The popular book and t.v series, Game Of Thrones stars the Stark family. The Starks started out the show with 6 children, who adopted 6 Direwolf pups. After this shows mad popularity, everyone wanted a “Direwolf.” (Which of course resemble breeds such as the Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute and so on and so forth.
Don’t get me wrong, Game of Thrones is one of my all times FAV shows, however people see the beauty of an animal on a TV show, and instantly want them for themselves.
What breed did play the Direwolf pups in Game Of Thrones?
Through my research, I found that the wolves are being played by Northern Inuit dogs. These can be mixes of Siberian Huskies, German Shepherds, and a variety of Inuit dogs. Siberian Huskies, and Malamutes being two of the top “wolf like” breeds, people began adopting them like crazy, without first doing research on them.
Like we said above… yes, huskies are an amazing breed – but, because people do not take the time to do the necessary research, far too many get dumped in a shelter, or even abandoned onto the streets.
Have you ever thought about adopting a Northern breed? If so, what peeked your interest?
