If your dog is anything like ours, he absolutely loves water!
In fact, we haven't met many dogs that don't enjoy splashing or swimming through a lake or pool, especially on those hot summer days.
With summer in full swing, chances are you are going to be spending some recreational time with your pup in a local dog-friendly lake or pool. While your pup may seem like a natural swimmer, he is still susceptible to the same dangers that humans are.
It is important to know how to keep your dog safe while he is in the water this summer.
If your pup is going to be swimming in a lake or the ocean,
it is important to invest in a life jacket for him. Just like humans, dogs can suffer from a leg cramp
or they can become overly tired after spending the afternoon romping through the water and they may have trouble staying afloat. A life jacket will make it easier for your pooch to stay afloat and it can even save their life.
If your pup is going to be spending a lot of time playing in lakes or rivers, it is a good idea to get them a Giardia vaccination. Giardia is a parasite that causes a diarrheal illness.
It is found in soil or water that has been contaminated with feces from an animal that has been infected. It is fairly easy to contract if your pup swallows any water while playing.
After your dog is done romping around in the water, it is important to give them a bath. A bath or shower will rinse off any dirt or bacteria
your pup may get on him from the lake or river. It is also a good idea to remove your dog's collar afterwards
as a wet collar can rub and cause hot spots.
If your pup is going to be spending the day in the water, they are going to be a dirty mess at the end of the day. Be sure to protect your car seats from the dirt, muck, and mud
