How Cold Is Too Cold for Your Dog?

By JennaDrady. | Dog Info Dog Health

Winter Is Coming! How many times have you seen that phrase this month? But it's true! Winter is on its way and oh boy has it been getting chilly at night!

How Cold Is Too Cold for Your Dog? We all know it is key to give our dogs plenty of exercise, walks, play time etc... but the cold, snowy, winter months can prove difficult to maintain usual routines. While some dogs absolutely love the cold, their humans may not feel the same. Or maybe the humans don't mind, but their dogs make it quite obvious that the snowy weather is just not their cup of tea. So today, I wanted to cover how cold is too cold for your dog.

How cold is too cold for your dog?

There are lots of things that come in to play here... there isn't just one temps that make it too cold for all dogs. Some things that factor in are:
  • dampness
  • wind chill
  • coat type
  • size of dog
  • age
  • weight

Dampness

On a cold day, dampness can make it feel much colder. Damp weather tends to get right down to the bone, and isn't comfortable for neither dogs nor humans.

Wind Chill

While the day itself might not be too cold to be outside, all it takes it that brutal wind coming through to penetrate your dog's coat, as well as our winter coats!

Coat type

This makes a huge difference. For instance, think Siberian Husky. Their thick double coat allows them to withstand temps too cold for even humans to be out in comfortably. Compare that to a short hair single coat breed, they have much less fur to protect them from the cold.

Size of dog

I mean... this one speaks for itself. Your Chihuahua will not be quite as warm as a Saint Bernard.

Age

A senior dog, or a young pup will not be able to keep themselves as warm as they would need on a super cold day.

Weight

Body fat comes into play a lot during cold weather. A thin built pooch will likely get much colder than a thick, hefty one. Take all of these things into consideration during the cold winter months. Your dog will show you signs if he gets too cold such as holding his paws up off the cold ground, shivering etc... but using your own common sense can prevent them from getting to that point. Dog booties and winter coats can help, as well as activity - keep moving, exercise while your out in the cold with your dog to keep you both warm! If you have any tips you would like to share about keeping warm in the winter, please share in the comments!
