Summer is in full swing and we all know what that means...mosquitoes are out in full force. Although it important to protect yourself from these nasty, bloodsucking insects, it is also extremely important to protect your pup.
Mosquitoes carry a host of horrible diseases
that not only affect humans, but they also carry deadly diseases that can affect your pet's health
Heartworm disease is caused by long worms that infect your pet's heart.
Although these worms typically reside in your pet's heart, they have the ability to travel to your pet's lungs, as well as other vital organs,
causing serious and lasting damage that could result in death.
Heartworms are most commonly spread by mosquitoes.
According to the American Heartworm Society, when an animal is infected with heartworms, their bloodstream becomes inundated with tiny microfilaria or baby worms.
Mosquitoes then contract these microfilaria and transfer them to other animals. When the infected mosquito bites another animal, the worms are deposited into the animal's bloodstream. The worms will then travel through the bloodstream and infect other parts of the animal's body.
If you want to protect your dog from contracting heartworm disease, we suggest that you and your pup hop in the car (don't forget your dog seat cover!) and head over to your vet.
They can provide you with preventative heartworm medication that is designed to protect your dog from this awful disease.
Many oral medications, such as Heartgard® Plus,
should be taken once a month in order to provide adequate protection.
