How to Choose the Perfect Coat for Your Dog?

We live in the Chicago area where sub-zero temperatures are the norm in January. Most dogs wear coats in the windy city deep freeze.

Coat for Your Pet Dogs: What Kind of Pet Coat Should You Buy? But what about in places with normal winters, do dogs really need coats? Coat for Your Pet Dogs: What Kind of Pet Coat Should You Buy?Some dogs with thick fur stay warm on their own as long as they stay dry. But others "“ shorthaired or short-legged dogs, seniors and puppies, toy breeds, thin dogs without much body fat, and dogs with chronic health or immune system issues "“ need the extra protection when the temperatures drop.

1. Does It Fit?

A coat should give your dog good coverage, protecting the back and a portion of the stomach, though not so much that it gets in the way when they do their business. A coat should be snug, but not so tight that they can't move. Take the time to measure your dog: measuring from the shoulder blades to the base of the tail, and then around the widest part of the chest and most narrow part of the waist. Brands have different systems so always check your dog's measurements against the brand's sizing chart. Be realistic about your dog's anatomy. A Yorkshire terrier and Dachshund may both be small, but clearly they have very different body shapes.

2. What Is It Made Out Of?

Consider your climate and the coat's purpose. Does your dog need a coat that is water or wind resistant or both? How much insulation do they need "“ consider your climate as well as your dog's breed, shape, and size. In general coats should be lightweight and not itchy. If you live in a damp climate, look for a coat that has a water resistant shell. Fleece is always a great option, but make sure it has top waterproof layer. Avoid wool in damp climates. For colder, windier weather, choose a more insulated (fluffy) coat for added warmth.

3. Is It Easy to Clean?

Winter is messy and dogs and their coats get dirty. Always make sure the coat is durable and machine washable. I also recommend dark colors, which hide the dirt and stay clean longer.

4. How Does It Go On?

Obviously, you want a coat that is easy to take on and off. This is especially true for senior dogs that may need extra time or puppies that won't sit still for long. Pullovers are great for easy, patient dogs. But coats that wrap around the body and fasten with Velcro are by far the fastest and easiest for everyone else.

5. Bonus Tips: Leash Opening and Night Protection

I recommend a coat that has an opening for the leash to attach to the collar. This makes life and walks much easier. Some coats have a clip for the leash directly on the back, but these are a bit risky if your dog is an escape artist. Since it gets dark earlier in the winter months, look for a coat with some reflective qualities for added safety. Finally, always take the time to find the right coat for your dog and climate. When possible, try on coats in the store or order from online sources that allow for easy returns. Bundle up! Enjoy the last few months of winter with your dog! Why Did I Wait So Long?

I should have bought these years ago. Easy to use, easy to clean, and tons of headaches saved in trying to keep a blanket or covering on the car seat when taking the dogs on the trails, camping, etc. Highly recommend.

Terrific product at a great price

I am beyond pleased with everything about my new 4Knines split rear back seat cover! The fabric is soft and attractive. The fit in my 2018 CR-V is perfect. Dirt just brushes off it, and water beads and wipes right off. It couldn't easier to put on and take off. This is a wonderful product at a great price.

XL Back seat bench cover

Love our new purchase from 4Knines. We were looking for a back seat cover that would fit our new 2017 F250 crew cab and this one fits perfect. Highly recommend for those wishing to maintain their seats. The material is excellent quality and it’s quick and easy to put on and take off. We also have the bucket seat covers from this company for our 2015 Yukon Denali and have gotten a lot of use out of them over the last couple of years and they are still in excellent condition and so are our seats. Thanks 4Knines for a great product!

great product, sturdy, XL great fit for new 4Runner, cleans easy

I was worried this product might not hold up since one I recently purchased from another company ripped w/in 2 weeks from my 30lb Aussie pulling on it when trying to get into the back. I have been extremely pleased with the XL cargo liner. The straps are much more durable with more stitching and better fabric. I have a 50 lb Border Collie mix and 30 lb Aussie. They have already put the liner to the test!!! I have used it numerous times in the short 2 weeks I have had it. The XL was a great choice for my new 2017 4Runner. It allows me to strap to the front headrests and protect the whole back of the SUV. The skirt protects the bumper. It is too long when I only strap to the middle seats but I just fold under the extra fabric and still have the skirt. I use the full length most of the time and reason I got the XL. The fabric is sturdy and protected the back when the dogs spilled water. So far I have used it to haul bags of topsoil, go on a camping trip and visit family. I purchased the liner mainly to protect the back b/c we have flyball practice every week and tournaments every month. That's a lot of in/out for equipment, doggies and crates. I was very glad to see the edges fold up to protect the wheel wells. I am extremely pleased with this product and sorry I wasted money on my first purchase from other company. I have already recommended the liner to fellow flyball teammates. Shipping was great also. I ordered on a Sunday and it arrived Sat. So far I have just swept the dirt off and used a shop vac. Cleans up well and easy.
