Homemade Stocks & Broths for Healthy Canine Bodies

Recently a friend mentioned she had noticed her dog showing difficulty getting up so she needed to find a supplement for his joints. As we talked, I realized she didn't feed him any broths or stocks.

Homemade Stocks & Broths for Healthy Canine Bodies Bone broth and chicken stock are staples in my house so I tend to think everyone feeds it to their dogs.

The Benefits

These mineral rich infusions contain calcium, gelatin and glucosamine chondroitin which can serve as preventatives as well as healing. Kirby at eight years old runs, jumps, and plays as if he was a puppy and easily keeps up with his one year old sibling Kenzie. During illness, they are known to support the body, and since they are easy to digest, the body's energy can focus on healing. They are also thought to improve leaky gut. Homemade broths and stocks are always richer and more flavorful than the store varieties which usually contain ingredients deemed dangerous for dogs such as onions. These watered down versions are known to lack quite a bit of gelatin.

Ways to Serve

These stocks and broths are the basis for many of the home cooked meals and a variety of treats I make for my dogs as well as several human recipes. Even if you don't home cook you can pour some over dry kibble, serve as a cool or warm drink depending on the weather, or freezing in small molds or ice cube trays for a frozen treat.

How to Store

You can store the stock in wide mouth mason jars leaving an inch head room from the top of the stock to the top of the jar so as it freezes and expands, it doesn't break the glass. Let the jars cool, then freeze or refrigerate. You can remove the congealed fat after refrigerating or even freezing. It will keep in the refrigerator for about a week and in the freezer for up to three months.

Homemade Stocks & Broths for Healthy Canine BodiesChicken Stock Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 - 3 chicken carcasses
  • 4 carrots, coarsely chopped
  • 4 celery sticks, coarsely chopped
  • sprigs of fresh parsley (optional)
  • sprigs of fresh thyme (optional)
  • 2-3 garlic cloves, chopped (optional)*
  • 2 tablespoons sea salt
  • cold filtered water
  • 1 - 2 chicken feet (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Place the bones in the crock pot and cover with water.
  2. Add in the remaining ingredients. Start on highest setting and bring to a boil.
  3. Cook for at least five hours on high or overnight on low.
  4. Skim the scum/foam that rises to the top as needed.
  5. Strain through a small mesh colander.
The chicken feet will help add more gelatin to the final product. You can add 1 "“ 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar when you add the water to pull the calcium and nutrients from the bones. I don't feel it's necessary since the bones are pretty much cooked to mush. Tip: Over time I throw chicken bones and veggies into bags in my freezer so I always have enough to make more when I find I'm getting low. I used to make it on the stove but now use a large crock pot which needs little attention and doesn't take up room on my stove. *Holistic veterinarians not only approve of garlic but feed it to their dogs. You can read more about it here. Kirby and Kenzie have never had any adverse reactions but please feel free to omit if it is still a concern. Why Did I Wait So Long?

I should have bought these years ago. Easy to use, easy to clean, and tons of headaches saved in trying to keep a blanket or covering on the car seat when taking the dogs on the trails, camping, etc. Highly recommend.

Terrific product at a great price

I am beyond pleased with everything about my new 4Knines split rear back seat cover! The fabric is soft and attractive. The fit in my 2018 CR-V is perfect. Dirt just brushes off it, and water beads and wipes right off. It couldn't easier to put on and take off. This is a wonderful product at a great price.

XL Back seat bench cover

Love our new purchase from 4Knines. We were looking for a back seat cover that would fit our new 2017 F250 crew cab and this one fits perfect. Highly recommend for those wishing to maintain their seats. The material is excellent quality and it’s quick and easy to put on and take off. We also have the bucket seat covers from this company for our 2015 Yukon Denali and have gotten a lot of use out of them over the last couple of years and they are still in excellent condition and so are our seats. Thanks 4Knines for a great product!

great product, sturdy, XL great fit for new 4Runner, cleans easy

I was worried this product might not hold up since one I recently purchased from another company ripped w/in 2 weeks from my 30lb Aussie pulling on it when trying to get into the back. I have been extremely pleased with the XL cargo liner. The straps are much more durable with more stitching and better fabric. I have a 50 lb Border Collie mix and 30 lb Aussie. They have already put the liner to the test!!! I have used it numerous times in the short 2 weeks I have had it. The XL was a great choice for my new 2017 4Runner. It allows me to strap to the front headrests and protect the whole back of the SUV. The skirt protects the bumper. It is too long when I only strap to the middle seats but I just fold under the extra fabric and still have the skirt. I use the full length most of the time and reason I got the XL. The fabric is sturdy and protected the back when the dogs spilled water. So far I have used it to haul bags of topsoil, go on a camping trip and visit family. I purchased the liner mainly to protect the back b/c we have flyball practice every week and tournaments every month. That's a lot of in/out for equipment, doggies and crates. I was very glad to see the edges fold up to protect the wheel wells. I am extremely pleased with this product and sorry I wasted money on my first purchase from other company. I have already recommended the liner to fellow flyball teammates. Shipping was great also. I ordered on a Sunday and it arrived Sat. So far I have just swept the dirt off and used a shop vac. Cleans up well and easy.
